Question Using the "Charming" skills

I have noticed that there are several skills that are useful with 0 points in their associated Attribute. Also, some skills that are very useful have not yet been assigned to an Attribute. These seem to be good skills to make charms of since many people may want to include them in their build with a necklace.

Examples of single skills;
Resurrect
Purge Conditions
Antidote Signet
Frenzy
Defensive Stance
Glyph of Lesser Energy
Plague Touch

Examples where points don't matter or less is better;
Apply Poison with Fragility.
Glyph of Sacrifice with Charm Animal
Phantom Pain with Axe Rake or Axe Twist

I'll leave a few examples for other people.

Are builds that depend on "Charms" a viable option?

Plague Sending in its current state is actually best w/o any points in curses :P.

I was considering an R/E build that used Read the Wind and Conjure, and then charmed frenzy, but it would not have been able to maintain much energy without Marksmans Wager.

I do believe they will take up an Elite Slot if you use a charm/necklace from another profession. I wouldn't want to waste an elite slot on a Resurrect oO

But yeah.. those make for great skills on secondary's because they don't require any points.

If you've got the money you can kee charming your skills over and over again, so it's definitly a possible option. However, Narc is right in that an out-of-profession charm is going to be elite even if they wouldn't otherwise be. And, as nice as those skills you mentioned are, do they really have the power to make you give up all of the othe elites in your two professions? To me, the answer's usually no. Although, the possibility is there to create something extremely powerful by combining not two but three professions in your skill bar, so it's definitly an intriguing avenue to explore.

yeah gotta love it, if you increase curses you just increase the cost of plague sending without increasing the effect

An elementalist/* suddenly becomes much more deadly if they take lingering curse on the necklace! Thats one spell that you actually benefit somewhat by using it with no attribute points.

I love all this info but I'm lost on one aspect of it all...

How do you charm at all? I still haven't figured that out and would love some much needed help in figuring out what will help me get this down.

Charms are created at a charm crafter. There's an NPC you can go to who'll take some crafting materials and gold - how much and what depend on the profession of the skill and whether it's elite or not - and create a charm of any skill. You can then go to another NPC and buy a skill necklace which you can use to let someone learn that skill temporarily. When you learn it temporarily it shows up in a special place on your skill list with a reminder of how much time is left for you to use that skill but it otherwise acts like any other skill. Or you can get a skill ring - bosses drop them - to let them learn that skill permanently, just as if you'd used a Signet of Capture or bought it from a skill merchant.

There's also a charm merchant who will buy skill charms and sell them to other players. As well as a charm gambler who, for a healthy fee, will show you 3 charms at random and give you the option to buy one.

So, simply put to charm a skill you buy one. You'll need someone else that knows a particular skill if you want a precise one or you'll need to be lucky with the NPC merchants but it's all just a matter of forking over the cash.

Default Lingering Curse?

Can you even use a charm of an elite from another profession? I know that any non-elite from another profession takes the elite place on your skill bar, but can you then even use an elite from another class?

Hmm, it seems as if you shouldn't be able to.

You can use any skill from another profession. It'll just be an elite skill on your bar. That does include out-of-profession elite skills which, really, have no penalty. But, mostly, they're made unusable by the fact that your character won't have the associated attribute. There aren't many elite skills that are unlinked or work without anything in their associated attribute.

Can you make a skill ring from a charm? Like let's say you went to the charm Gambler... and got a skill that you hadn't been able to find... could you then put that onto a ring, making it permanent? I've never done any charming or used any rings before, although I did pick up an Elementalist Ring last beta event.

That is sorta how it works. However, you can NOT "make a skill ring".
Charms can go INTO rings of the right type.

Yeah, I figured, but I wasn't sure if you could put a skill into a ring if you actually had it LEARNED, as opposed to getting it from a Charm Necklace. Thanks.

Also, Rotting Flesh has a duration of 10 seconds with no points into it's associated attribute... which is a decent duration, although the skill's usefulness is sketchy. Epidemic, a good skill, is another one not affected by any attribute.

If you're lucky. There are still a number of skills in the game that aren't at any trainer, no matter how remote and hard to get to, nor used by any boss, no matter how tough. They are often some of the best skills. Obtaining them requires getting lucky with boss drops, then getting lucky again at the exotic skill charm trader. So, in this game, if you're doubly-lucky, you get to create the build you want. Personally, I'd rather they made this a game of skill, but what the heck...

Yes. Some skills are hard to find. I've even heard that it looks like some skills aren't even available at the skill gambler making them effectively out of the game were it not for the fact you could find some of them on premades and get charms that way.

But it's important to remember that the game you've all played so far is an incomplete one. There's areas out there that haven't been revealed publically during the BWEs. I wouldn't be surprised that all the skills which can't be found via boss or by trainer are going to be located in those areas or added elsewhere.

A good point Rex.

So to clarify, how are you to pass on a learned skill to another player? (reproducing a skill outside a charm trader)

You can craft a charm from any skill you know, regardless of how you learned it. That's the only way to pass on the skill. Make a new charm and pass it along. That's because when you necklace or ring a skill the charm you used vanishes.

Default Dev interview

I was also thinking about the skill availablity, but there is good news. In the informal interview the District Nudists had with the Devs (now posted on their site) one of the questions asked was if all the skills will be available from bosses/trainers. The Devs answered that that was 'in the plans'. While not a completely solid answer, it was nice to hear.
